I have not tested the EWS on TOMTOM yet!
Currently it has been tested on the Garmin 1300 and 1350 GPS Units
Step One - Create a folder on your C:\ Drive or other designated
drive called Louisiana Speedtraps.
Step Two - Download the Garmin
POI Loader and install on your computer. You can also save into
your folder for later installation. You can also get the POI Loader from
Garmin directly at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/.
Step Three - Download the Louisiana Speed Traps.com EWS File in zip format, to
your C:\Louisiana Speedtraps folder.
Step Four - Unpack the zip file into the same folder. The zip file contains the
following files:
1) louisiana-speedtraps-ews.csv - This is the file containing many
Louisiana Speedtrap GPS Coordinates
2) louisiana-popocams-ews.csv - This file contains the GPS Coordinates of
Traffic Enforcement Camera's (Only Lafayette, Lake Charles, Thibodaux thus far)
3) laspeedtrapspopo.bmp - This is the Icon for the POPO Alerts (untested)
Step 5 - Assumes you have installed/ran the Garmin POI Installer.exe file and it has successfully installed on your computer. Connect your Garmin via the cable supplied when you purchased your unit. If you did not get one you will have to buy one. The part number is Part Number: 010-10477-03 from Garmin. Walmart, Radio Shack, or Best Buy should have them. These are very common and your cable for your camera or an external hard drive may work in some cases. I had one laying around that came off an external hard drive.
There is an excellent tutorial on using POI Loader at http://gravesitebusiness.com/blog/2010/11/find-cemeteries-with-your-gps/
This site uses GPS to find cemeteries. You'll be uploading GPS Data for
Speed Traps & GPS data for POPO Cams.
I'll work on some installation instructions on this site as time permits but there is plenty of resources on the internet already using Google Search..
Note: POPO is Urban slang term for the Police. It originated in California in the late 80's where on the beaches police used bicycles to patrol. On the backs of their uniforms were the initials PO (Police Office). They often worked in pairs so when they were riding side by side it read "POPO"!
